Tips to Ensure a Smooth Newborn Photo Session

Filed in: Newborn

Welcoming a newborn into your family is an extraordinary moment that deserves to be cherished forever. And what better way to capture those precious early days than through a newborn photo session? These sessions not only provide an opportunity to freeze time but also create beautiful memories that you can treasure for a lifetime. To ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience, I have compiled some invaluable tips for making your newborn photo session go smoothly.

Schedule the Session Wisely:
Timing is everything when it comes to newborn photography. The ideal window for a session is within the first two weeks of the baby’s arrival if you want sleepy photos. During this period, newborns tend to sleep for more extended periods and are generally more cooperative. If you don’t care about sleepy photos it is fine to schedule your session a bit later. Plan the session for a time when the baby is well-fed and content. I always do my newborn sessions at 10am. This seems to be an ideal time for parents and baby.

Prepare for Comfort:
A calm and comfortable baby will make for a successful photo session. Create a warm and cozy environment by setting the room temperature slightly higher than usual. Newborns are accustomed to the warmth of the womb and will be more relaxed in those conditions. I always advise to keep the outfit changes to a minimum. 1-2 outfits is typically more than enough. Each time we change the baby is another time to disturb him/her and disrupt the photos. Soft knits, not too many buttons, zippers are always best.

Be Prepared for Breaks:
Newborns have their own agenda, and sometimes that means needing a break during the session. Be patient and flexible, understanding that babies may need feeding, changing, or soothing breaks. Take this opportunity to bond with your little one and enjoy the moment. A calm and relaxed atmosphere will ensure the baby feels secure and loved, resulting in more serene and beautiful photographs.

Dress for Simplicity:
When it comes to newborn photography, less is often more. Choose simple, timeless outfits that do not distract from the baby’s natural beauty. Neutral colors and soft textures work best, allowing the focus to remain on the newborn. Consider coordinating outfits (not matching) for family members. Avoid outfits with busy patterns or large logos as they can detract from baby.

I hope these tips help you in preparing for your newborn session. The main thing to remember is enjoy the moment!
